Translation resources

AVRO has its own knowledge management system and, therefore, does not use resources such as electronic or machine translation programs.

We also believe that AVRO dx can help translators speed up their translation work and, based on this understanding, we make extensive use of this unique database tool.

Trained translators

All of our translators, including native speakers, are required to go through a training program provided by AVRO so as to ensure their commitment to the high level of accuracy that guides our work proposition.

In general, it takes months for translators to finish this training program as it comprises mainly the practical aspects of translation, considering that the art of translating is by no means the same as knowing how to speak the source language.

We make it a point to confirm our understanding

Whenever a doubt arises, it is part of our policy to contact the client by telephone and e-mail to ensure our understanding of the original file is correct, that being the reason why we translate only what we understand.

Desktop team

AVRO is one of the few companies in the world that has its own desktop team to ensure translation projects are delivered in the same layout as that of the original, including images, graphs, figures, charts, etc.

Our desktop team is able to tackle any text and image editing application.

Spreadsheets with hidden comments and code embedded text are equally handled by our desktop professionals.

Thanks to its experience that spans more than twenty years, AVRO has garnered a reputation as being one of the most reputable translation companies in Brazil, able to tackle any translation project in a many different sectors.

Team of professionals

Translation projects are delivered in the same layout as that of the original. Figures, tables, photos, charts, and graphs are edited by skilled professional so that the final project in the target language is identical to the original. Although we are committed to meeting deadlines, we also know that the art of translating is not mechanical. Difficulties in understanding the writing style and the structure of the source language text coupled with the need to figure out the best native-like equivalent for a given term or segment may take more time than expected. So, in a sincere effort to stick to our corporate policy, we let our clients know in advance that there may be setbacks along the way that may force us to ask for more time to finish the work. Reason # 1

AVRO is a translation company (and not simply an agency), and as such it is highly committed to 100% accuracy. AVRO is one of the few translation companies in the world that ensures that all of its translation projects are thoroughly revised before being sent back. As a translation company (and not simply an agency), AVRO has its own internal proofreaders, who meticulously check the required level of accuracy. We never translate what we don't understand. Our translations reflect the work of professionals committed to accuracy and native-like writing. Reason # 2

AVRO is a diligent, efficient company with a highly qualified team of translators, proofreaders, and editors that are dedicated to accuracy and providing the best possible quality in the target language. Your public will be able to comfortably read and understand the translated text as if it were originally written in their own language.

If you're looking for quality, accuracy, and fair price, you should think AVRO. But if you're looking only for low price, we certainly won't be your best choice.

Services offered by AVRO

Non-certified translation

AVRO accepts translation work from any sector in the following languages and combinations:

  • English/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/English
  • Spanish/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/Spanish
  • French/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/French
  • German/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/German
  • Italian/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/Italian
  • Japanese/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/Japanese
  • Chinese/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/Chinese
  • Portuguese/Arabic
  • Russian/Portuguese
  • Portuguese/Russian

All translations are charged per 'lauda', based on 1,000 characters without spaces, for the following languages (including the aforementioned combinations):

  • English
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Russian

The amount charged for the following languages and their combinations is by A4 page, regardless of the number of characters:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Japanese

What is a 'lauda' and how its price is calculated

One 'lauda' represents a certain number of characters that may range from, say, 1,000 to 1,500 strokes, with or without spaces (depending on company policy). The total number of characters in one 'lauda' (a counting made by the computer's own text editor) does not necessarily mean that one page (A4 or letter size) will be completely used.

Character count has nothing to do with the number of pages. For example, say a particular project contains 50 pages. This doesn't mean the translated version in the target language will also have 50 'laudas'. It may have more or fewer 'laudas', depending on the total character count. This means that a project's final price can only be calculated after the translation has been completed. Prior to that, we can only make an estimate. Our final project estimates have a very small margin of error of at most 10%. If the number of characters of a given project adds up tp, say, 100,000 characters, considering the standard 'lauda' of 1,000 characters (without spaces) and the price per 'lauda' is R$ 30.00, then we have:

  • Number of 'laudas' (100,000 divided by 1,000) = 100
  • Final project price (100 'laudas' x R$ 30.00) = R$ 3,000.00

AVRO has not adopted a 'word' based counting system because both the amount charged and payment to translators would not be fair, given that legitimate translation work involves a dual effort, namely the mental exercise required in executing a top-quality translation in accordance with the proper linguistic structure, including all aspects of cultural norms (punctuation, accents, etc.).

How can you be sure a translation is reliable?

The art of translating is not to be confused with producing a word-for-word 'mirror image' of the original text. For a translation to be trustworthy, the translator must be well-versed in both languages, and above all, be familiar with the subject matter. In this case, a translation depends not only on the translator's personal skill but also on constant research and meticulous proofreading until the project is done. Here's one of our recent translation projects involving specific terms from the shipping industry.

Original text:

The Owners agree to let and the Charterers agree to hire the vessel from the time of delivery for about 360 days WOG via safe port(s)/ berth(s) always afloat, always accessible, always within Institute Warranty Limits.

Translated text:

O ARMADOR DISPONENTE concorda em dar o navio em afretamento por tempo e o AFRETADOR concorda em tomar o navio em afretamento por tempo, a partir da data da entrega do referido navio, pelo prazo de 360 dias WOG, por todo ou parte do tempo coberto por este contrato, para operar em porto (s) e berço (s) seguro (s), sempre flutuando, sempre acessível, sempre nos Limites de Garantias do Instituto.

Please take note of some of the striking features of this translation:

  • The number of words in Portuguese is almost double.
  • The English adverb 'about' had to be translated in a way that captured the exact idea in the original text, not merely as a synonym, which involved research and consulting shipping experts.
  • The jargon used in the translated text is a perfect match for the jargon used in the documents and relevant literature. Note that a simple word like 'owner' was translated into Portuguese by using a phrase that could hardly be found in the available dictionaries. In shipping parlance, the customary meaning of the word is not simply 'possuidor' or 'proprietário'. Again, currently available bilingual dictionaries don't always offer practical, accurate, and reliable connotations like that.

Now, take a look at the same text translated by an English teacher that occasionally also works as a free-lance translator:

Original text:

The Owners agree to let and the Charterers agree to hire the vessel from the time of delivery for about 360 days WOG via safe port(s)/ berth(s) always afloat always accessible, always within Institute Warranty Limits.

Translated text:

Os Proprietários concordam em locar e os FRETADORES concordam em alugar o navio, a partir da data da entrega por cerca de 360 dias WOG, via porto (s) e ancoradouro (s) seguro (s) sempre na superfície, sempre acessível, sempre dentro dos Limites de Garantia do Instituto.

Take note of some of the striking features of this translation:

  • There was absolutely no concern about the reliability of the original. And this very sense of reliability doesn't mean simply translating words or stringing together synonyms. It's exactly the opposite of what most people think. Providing an accurate translation means rewriting the text in the target language in such a way that the reader believes it had been written by a native writer.
  • The typical jargon used by professionals in the sea freight industry was completely disregarded. The translator restricted himself to using such common terms such as 'shipper', 'rent', 'lease', 'owner', etc.

Also note that reading the translated text is garbled by the lack of accuracy and commitment to the client's interests and needs. Without a thorough orthographic and technical proofreading, this job is nothing more than a word-for-word translation, the kind produced by electronic translation programs, instead of a reliable professional translation. As a result, clients run the risk of suffering considerable losses by accepting a translation project that has no added value.

What is the advantage of choosing a company whose translation projects are checked by orthographic and technical proofreaders?

The reliability and accuracy of a translation project depend entirely on this type of revision. Furthermore, one revision alone is not always enough for the project to be considered finished.

Therefore, it's not uncommon for a particular translation to undergo several revisions to ensure its success, thus adding value to the product or service.

Certified translations

AVRO accepts translation work from any sector in the following languages and combinations:

  • English
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Russian
  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • Japanese

All certified translations are charged per 'lauda' (linage) of 1,000 characters without spaces.

The price charged for certified translations is not based on the same parameters used for charging non-certified translations.

Certified translations usually costs a lot more than non-certified ones as their prices are legally determined by local authorities.

Certified translations cannot be delivered by e-mail as they are supposed to carry the seal and the identification data of a sworn translator.

Certified translations are printed out on letter-head stationery and, therefore, can only be delivered in person or mailed to the client.

Sworn translators are required to translate only the portions of the file that are clearly identified as readable. Whatever portion is deemed unclear or for any reason is not translatable, as is the case of signatures, pictures or the like is explicitly cited in the translated text.

What difference is there between a non-certified and a certified translation?

In terms of accuracy and reliability there should be no difference at all. Although the level of responsibility is the same for both, sworn translators are solely and exclusively responsible for their work, that being the reason why every certified translation must carry the name and identification of the sworn translator.

Proofreading services (orthography and structuring)

Revision

We take orthography and structuring proofreading services for the following languages:

  • Portuguese
  • English

The kind of revision work AVRO has developed encompasses more than a simple spelling check. It goes far beyond that. The text as a whole is assessed in terms of accuracy, cohesion, coherence, and euphony. This sometimes involves reading part or the entire project out loud.

The price charged for certified translations are not based on the same parameters used for charging non-certified translations.

It's not uncommon for us to meet with the client to discuss revision details and make the original text cleaner and more straightforward because the writers themselves usually have no concept of text production. Visiting the client is often the only way to work out the structural needs of the language. We're very much attentive to linguistic rules and cultural issues, which may require significant changes so that the reader sees that the final text flows smoothly.

For this reason, making an orthographic and structural revision requires skill and experience. We take pride in stating that our proofreaders are top-notch professionals with years of experience and steadfast dedication.

Normalization services (ABNT standards)

Normalization

We take normalization services only for the Portuguese language.

Normalization projects are handled by a skilled professional with large experience in Library Science and ABNT technical standards.

About AVRO

AVRO is a Brazilian-based translation company located in Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais.

With close to twenty years in the market, our goal is to bridge the communication gap between peoples through translations and systems that help professional translators. In addition to its own team of translators and proofreaders, AVRO also has a team of copydesk professionals.

Since its very beginning, AVRO's corporate policy is to deliver translations that reflect accuracy and reliability. This is not an easy task when pricing comes to the fore. Usually, the services of a translation company are hired not for their skills and reputation as price weighs heavily on the scales of decision.

Pricing poses a serious challenge to translation companies like AVRO when it comes to competing with individual translators and price-oriented agencies. We don't mean to say that we charge high prices for our services. What we mean is that we charge fair prices for high-quality services and, based on our policy, we do not compete in the 'lower' pricing market as we understand quality and reliability should be given priority.

According to AVRO's founder, Ascanio Roquette, 'our principles shall never be compromised by self-interested practices. We will always stick to our mission and corporate policy'.

Aside from providing reliable translations, we are also involved in a painstaking effort to produce and launch the first online English-Portuguese-English comprehensive dictionary – AVRO dx.

People from the four corners of the globe will be able to use AVRO dx to the fullest – an invaluable and totally free tool for translators, teachers, students, secretaries, and anyone involved with both English and Portuguese languages.

Our mission

To bridge the communication gap between people who speak different languages, sharing and passing along cultures, knowledge, know-how, technologies, and innovations throughout the world, while contributing to our clients' personal and professional success.

Our commitment

to our partners...

To advocate ethics and mutual trust so that our business relationships contribute to the success of everyone involved.

to society...

To contribute to the personal and professional development of each member of our team, creating environments and opportunities for work based on the principles of accountability, honesty, and competence, which guide our working philosophy.

to our team members...

To advocate ethics and mutual trust so that our business relationships contribute to the success of everyone involved.

The translation market – A new approach

Given that, unfortunately, translators are still considered a non-regulated profession in our country, one of AVRO's goals is to put in time and effort to make lawmakers aware of the need to pass a law regulating the profession of translator in Brazil.

Surprisingly, almost anyone can be called a translator in Brazil (a practice that is also common the world over) as no formal qualification is required from anyone willing to become a translator.

AVRO also advocates that a minimum five-year documented translation experience be necessary for anyone to be certified as a translator.

AVRO understands that, in the case of translation companies, trustworthiness cannot be associated with a web site, letter-head stationery and e-mails. As for individual free-lance translators, no one can be deemed a reliable translator after taking a six-month or a two-year course, or just because he or she knows how to communicate in a given second language.

The certification of highly qualified professional translators shall also be part of AVRO's endeavor. To that end, we have been working on a five-year training program for the certification of professional translators.

This is not going to be a money-raising program, but a serious effort to provide potential translators with the required practice they need to be awarded the status of a professional translator.
